Snoring is due to obstructed airway movement during breathing while sleeping. When the air flow is obstructed from your mouth and nose it causes a vibration in the walls of the throat causing a loud sound known as snoring. Some causes of snoring come from obstructed nasal airways, poor muscle tone in the throat and tongue, bulky throat tissue, usually found in overweight individuals, and one of the most common causes long soft palate and/or uvula (which is the dangling tissue in back of the mouth).
Snoring is not only disruptive to your relationship, more importantly can be a sign of a serious disorder called Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Snoring is one of the first signs of obstructive sleep apnea.
Lifestyle changes, such as losing weight, avoiding alcohol close to bedtime or sleeping on your side, can help stop snoring.
Most Common and Symptoms of Chronic Snoring and Disrupted Sleep:
At Brisbane Dental and Denture clinic we offer Somndent Mandibular Advancement Splints. These are like mouth guards and are worn at night to hold the jaw and tongue forward. There is a degree of fine tuning in using these devices. SomnoDent is worn when you sleep. The appliance is very discrete, allowing you to close your lips so it is not obvious that you are wearing it. SomnoDent is available for patients with teeth or dentures. The appliance can be worn by patients without any upper or lower teeth.
The SomnoDent appliance is custom made for each patient. SomnoDent inhibits the jaw from moving into the OSA onset position. The appliance is comprised of upper and lower dental plates with a unique patented fin coupling component, which allows normal mouth opening and closing.
